Introduction
The Database provides a powerful tool for searching the convicts' records and for
compiling statistics, but no theory about the white settlement of Australia would be adequate
without reference to the letters and diaries written by the real participants in this human drama.
Unfortunately few documents from the convicts remain, nor from the aborigines, however here are a
selection from the "officials", plus some
stories of the time compiled by our team's historian, Adair Bunnett.
